The Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS) is a national accreditation program that is applicable to healthcare providers offering Medicare-funded diagnostic imaging services. Service providers can range from large facilities offering complex imaging services through to general practices providing simple diagnostic ultrasounds.
As part of the DIAS, diagnostic imaging services are assessed against the DIAS Practice Accreditation Standards (the Standards), which are currently in their 3rd Edition. These Standards are managed by the Australian Government Department of Health and provide a range of benefits to diagnostic imaging providers, including risk reduction; and improved patient and equipment safety, service delivery, systems and processes and consumer engagement.
There are fifteen Practice Accreditation Standards for the DIAS. Accreditation to all fifteen Standards is known as ‘full suite’ accreditation while accreditation to three of these Standards (Standards 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4) is known as ‘entry level’ accreditation undertaken when a service first engages in the accreditation process.

About the DIAS
The DIAS aims to improve patient health outcomes by ensuring national standards of safety and quality are applied to all premises where diagnostic imaging services are provided. The benefits of accreditation against the DIAS include risk reduction, improved patient and equipment safety, service delivery, systems and processes, consumer engagement and access to Medicare funding.
Diagnostic imaging service providers are required to be accredited against the DIAS to receive Medicare rebates for relevant services. Two pathways to accreditation are available.
The Department of Health released the DIAS 3rd Edition Standards and a revised User Guide on the 1 January 2016. All services undergoing accreditation or re-accreditation are assessed against the 3rd Edition Standards. Pathways to DIAS Accreditation
When registering for QIP accreditation, the DIAS offers two pathway options for diagnostic imaging service providers:
Entry Level Accreditation
Entry level accreditation is for service providers new to the DIAS. It requires accreditation against three of the DIAS Standards (1.2, 1.3 and 1.4), and is valid for two years. Diagnostic imaging service providers are not required to achieve accreditation against the ’full suite’ of Standards until they approach their two-year renewal date.
Full Suite Accreditation
Full suite accreditation requires services to demonstrate that they meet all fifteen of the DIAS Standards, with accreditation awarded for a four year period. Diagnostic imaging service providers are not required to achieve accreditation against the ’full suite’ of Standards until approaching their two-year renewal date.
While requiring a greater upfront commitment, the benefit of a longer accreditation cycle offers more convenience to service teams, supports a greater strengthening of systems and processes, and provides consumers with increased peace of mind due to a recognised level of quality and safety of service provided.

Highly trained assessment teams
QIP’s Assessors are highly trained and qualified peer assessors who work across the Australian health, community and human services sectors. Our team will share their knowledge and support organisations through the accreditation assessment.
Celebrating the achievement of accreditation
Achieving QIP accreditation takes dedication, team work and a commitment to continuous quality improvement. When organisations achieve their accredited, certificated or verified status, they are provided with their own 'Promotional Toolkit' filled with a number of materials to celebrate and promote this achievement.
