Harmony week: a time to celebrate diversity

Harmony week is an annual celebration of Australia’s cultural diversity which since its inception in 1999, has been highlighting the rich multicultural landscape and shared values that unite the country’s people. Taking place between 17 and 23 March, this week also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity, respect, and sense of belonging for all Australians.

Every year during Harmony Week different organisations, individuals, and groups take time to reflect on the importance of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity refers to the variety of backgrounds, languages, and traditions that coexist in different societies. In Australia, this diversity is vast, and it is a reminder that it is one of the nation’s greatest strengths, contributing to social and economic growth, as well as community well-being.

Diversity in Australia is deeply rooted in our history. The country’s First Nations people have thrived for over 65,500 years, forming the foundation of the nation’s identity. Today, Australia is home to people from almost 300 different ancestries, each bringing their unique traditions and perspectives that enrich our society. Migration has also played an important role in in shaping modern Australia with over 7.6 million people from across the globe living in the country. This makes Australia one of the most multicultural societies in the world.

An integrated multicultural society fosters inclusiveness and respect for all, ensuring everyone feels a sense of belonging in their environment. During Harmony Week we remember that regardless of their background, all Australians are united by core values that promote mutual respect and social cohesion. Harmony week is a great opportunity for individuals, workplaces, schools, and community groups to come together and celebrate diversity.

QIP is committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse culture, both within our organisation and through the support we provide to the broader community. Our values –trust, accountability, leadership, collaboration, and kindness– guide our work in helping organisations create safe and culturally responsive environments. With a team that reflects Australia’s multicultural landscape, we celebrate and embrace diversity in all its forms.

We’re proud to support various organisations and services throughout Australia in strengthening inclusivity and cultural awareness through the delivery of accreditation frameworks such as those governed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare, QIC Health and Community Services Standards,  or Rainbow Tick,  These nationally-adopted standards include actions which help oganisations ensure they create a welcoming and culturally responsive environment for all individuals, regardless of their background.

As we celebrate this significant date, it’s important to embrace our rich cultural diversity and continue to build a nation that values and embraces respect, inclusion, and unity. Whether through simple acts of kindness, involvement in community events, or workplace initiatives, every effort contributes to a more peaceful and connected Australia.
